How Ransomware Affects Backups?

Backups, once your safety net, are increasingly becoming prime targets for sophisticated cyber-attacks.

Modern ransomware doesn’t just steal data; it systematically locks you out of it.

In just a few hours, critical files, virtual machines, and backups can be partially or fully encrypted. These attacks often occur during off-hours, disrupting operations and putting your business at risk.

But there’s hope: with advanced recovery tools, we can help you regain access to your data quickly and securely.

Data Backup FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Find essential information about ransomware attacks, effective decryption, and AS Data Recovery’s expert support.

Which backup files can you recover data from?
We work on Veeam (VBK, VIB), Acronis (.tib, .tibx), SQL Server .bak, Oracle export files and other backup formats that are corrupted, deleted or encrypted. Send us the file details and we will tell you what is realistic.
My backup was encrypted by ransomware. Is it lost?
Not always. Many ransomware families encrypt only part of a large file, so data inside the backup can often be extracted from the parts that were not encrypted. Small backup files are usually encrypted completely and cannot be recovered without the key.
Is my data safe while you work on it?
Files are transferred over encrypted channels and handled only by the engineer on your case. An NDA is available on request.
The backup software refuses to open or restore the file. Can you still help?
Often yes. When the index or metadata of the backup is damaged, we read the internal structure of the file directly and extract the virtual machines, databases or files it still holds.
Do I have to send you the disk or the server?
Usually not. Most backup recoveries are done remotely: you upload the backup files or give us a secure remote session. Physically damaged media has to come to our lab.
How long does a backup recovery take?
It depends on the size of the files and the damage. After a first assessment we give you a time estimate and tell you what we expect to recover, before any paid work starts.
What should I do right now?
Do not delete, rename or re-run jobs on the damaged backup repository, do not reinstall the backup server, and make a copy of the affected files if you can. Then contact us.
