VMware, CitriX, Hyper-V, VirtualBox, and other virtualization solutions Virtual machines are subject to the same data loss problems as physical machines, such as power, hardware failure, software or network problems, file system corruption, ransomware, data deletion and other unexpected events. Our data recovery experts are uniquely qualified to minimize downtime by offering our customers several options for quickly and safely recovering inaccessible virtual machines, hypervisors, virtual servers, virtual cluster systems and any other type of virtual environment. Your first call is your most important call.

Data recovery services for all virtual environment

Here are a few virtualization technologies from which our experts can restore data:

Inexperienced attempts can not only fail but actively corrupt or overwrite the remaining recoverable data, making subsequent professional recovery more difficult, or even impossible.

Commercial software often fails to address the unique complexities of large, fragmented virtual disk files (like VMDK or VHDX) or hypervisor-level corruption (e.g., VMFS). We utilize proprietary tools and advanced technologies specifically designed to analyze, repair, and recover data from these damaged structures.

We provide customized solutions tailored to your company’s specific VM environment, maximizing the chances of successful, complete, and validated data restoration.

How can virtual machine data be deleted?

Data can be lost in virtual machines for a variety of reasons, from human error to cyber-attacks to operating system crashes. Recoveo has the experience to deal with any system and any data loss situation.
Common causes of data loss on virtualized systems :
  • Ransomware: encryption of virtual machine files
  • RAID storage system failure (card or disk failure)
  • Virtual disk corruption or erasure (VMDK, VHD, VHDX, etc.)
  • Fully formatted and partially overwritten virtual disks
  • Deleted or damaged files inside a VM
    Formatting and reinstallation, rewriting
File or partition table corruption on VMFS, ESX or ESXi server systems
  • LUNs/Volumes inaccessible, deleted or incorrectly sized
  • Formatted or overwritten hosts, datastores, volumes and VMs
  • Corrupt Datastores or host volumes (VMFS, NTFS, ReFS, XFS, etc)
  • Corrupted guest file systems
  • Deleted VMs or snapshots
  • “Datastore reformatted,
  • VMFS datastore volumes corrupted,
  • Deleted snapshots,
  • Corrupted file systems,

Our advices for recovering virtualized data

Stop using the system to stop all writes to the virtual disk concerned and then immediately make a copy of it on another secure storage device.

Never download new files or software into the virtual environment concerned, as this could result in data being permanently overwritten.

Always work with a backup copy or image file of your data, volume or virtual disk file to ensure that original data integrity remains absolutely intact.

Resetting or reformatting a problematic volume will delete all data and severely complicate any future recovery attempts, potentially making it impossible.

Emergency level

Two main ways to recover virtual machines: in-lab or remotely

Our 10 Gb/s access allows us to be very responsive and fast during exchanges, in the event of remote retrieval. Security is our top priority: we use the SFTP protocol exclusively for transfers. File integrity is checked on arrival, so you can be sure of 100% identical files.

Recovery of virtual machines in the lab

The majority of our rescues still take place in our laboratories. The main advantage: we have more recovery options with physical servers than with downloaded files. Laboratory recovery is indispensable in cases of deletion where data has actually been deleted, offering superior control and specialized equipment.

Remote recovery of virtual machines

This type of recovery is becoming increasingly common in our business. The advantage is that there’s no need to physically transport the machines or disks, so there are logistical savings and no risk of damage in transit. There are no customs issues to consider… Your server can remain online if services are running on it.

Data Recovery FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Get fast, accurate answers to common questions regarding ransomware and data recovery. Find essential information about ransomware attacks, effective decryption, and AS Data Recovery’s expert support. We guide you from prevention to full recovery, showing how to respond swiftly and strengthen your digital defense against future threats.

What kind of virtual machine issues can you recover data from?

We specialize in recovering data from a wide range of virtual machine problems, including corrupted or inaccessible VM disk files (VMDK, VHDX, VDI, etc.), failed snapshots, deleted virtual machines, host system failures, file system corruption within the guest OS, and even data encrypted or damaged by malware within the VM. We support environments like VMware, Hyper-V, VirtualBox, and more.

Can you recover an entire virtual machine, or just specific files from within it?

We offer both! Our capabilities extend from recovering an entire virtual machine to a bootable state, to extracting specific files, folders, or databases from within a corrupted or inaccessible VM disk. We tailor the recovery to your most urgent needs, whether it’s getting an application server back online or retrieving a single critical document.

What should I do immediately after discovering a virtual machine failure or data loss?

The most crucial first step is to stop all activity on the affected host and virtual disk immediately. Do not attempt to run repair utilities, create new snapshots, or write any new data to the storage. Make a bit-for-bit copy or image of the affected VM disk files or logical volume if possible, and then contact us as soon as possible. Working on copies prevents further damage and maximizes recovery success.

How long does virtual machine data recovery typically take?

The timeframe for VM recovery can vary significantly based on factors such as the extent of corruption, the size of the virtual disk, the type of virtual machine environment, and the specific data required. Once we receive your affected media or files, our initial diagnostic assessment will provide you with a clearer estimate of the expected recovery time and costs.

Is the data transfer secure?

Yes. Security is our priority. We exclusively use the SFTP protocol for all file transfers to ensure maximum security. We also perform an integrity check upon file arrival to confirm the recovered data is 100% identical to the original.

What Our Customers are saying?

Read the testimonials and discover how AS Data Recovery successfully helps businesses secure and recover their critical digital assets.

"When a ransomware attack completely locked down our main Hyper-V host, we thought we had lost two weeks of critical production data. The standard recovery tools failed to read the corrupted VHDX files. Your team’s specialized knowledge in virtual machine structure was the absolute difference-maker. Not only did you successfully repair and restore the virtual disks, but the recovered VMs booted up flawlessly. The speed and expertise in handling our complex virtual environment were outstanding."

A. Miller

IT Director Financial Services Firm

"We experienced a critical corruption event on our main VMFS datastore, making several high-priority VMware ESXi machines inaccessible. The situation was extremely time-sensitive. Your VM recovery specialists were responsive, providing an immediate diagnosis. They didn't just extract files; they rebuilt the data structure needed to bring the VMs back online. Their ability to manage and restore complex VMDK files from a damaged datastore saved our entire workflow. We highly recommend their specialized services."

J. Khan

Systems Administrator Cloud Hosting Provider

"We had a critical failure on our Proxmox cluster due to a hardware failure that corrupted the underlying storage volume, making all our KVM VMs unmountable. Since Proxmox isn't as widely supported as VMware, we were concerned. Your team quickly developed a tailored strategy, manually extracting and reconstructing the data from the fragmented virtual disk images. The recovery was complete, and we were able to migrate the restored data to a new host with zero data loss. It proved that specialized expertise and a custom approach are vital for complex virtualization environments."
